Evaluation

Evaluation at the Emergency Room or General Practitioner

When some of the symptoms above occur, they can be signs of a kidney stone but could also mimic other conditions. It is important to have the appropriate diagnostic testing to identify the correct diagnosis and if a kidney stone is present, to characterize its size, location, and hardness.

Testing

  • Vital signs and examination
  • Urinalysis (to check for blood and/or infection)
  • Imaging (such as a kidney ultrasound or a CT scan)

Referral to a Specialist

If a kidney stone has been diagnosed, whether large or small, the specialist at Fore River Urology and the Kidney Stone Center of Maine will review all of the available information and create a personalized plan with you.
